Hayworth Equipment Sales Celebrates 50 Years of Keeping Their Customers on the Road
In 2025, Hayworth Equipment Sales marks 50 years in business—a milestone that reflects decades of hard work, resilience, and a commitment to its customers. Since opening its doors in 1975, the company has grown from a small, family-run operation into a trusted name in truck and trailer sales, service, rentals, and parts across Alberta. Through every challenge and success, Hayworth has remained focused on providing practical solutions that keep customers moving.
A Journey from Humble Beginnings to Trusted Partner
The story of Hayworth Equipment Sales began when its founder, Elmer Schmidek, moved his family from Hinton to Edmonton in search of a new opportunity. With an entrepreneurial spirit, he purchased an old gas station on Stony Plain Road and 178th Street, transforming it into Edmonton’s first truck and trailer consignment center. What started as a small venture grew steadily, driven by hard work, strong relationships, and a dedication to customer service.
By 1986, the company had outgrown its original location and relocated west to the Acheson Industrial Area. This move provided room for expansion and the introduction of a full-service department, led by Elmer’s oldest son, Gary Schmidek. As demand for trailers increased, Hayworth adapted to serve industries such as construction, oilfield, transportation, and forestry. Alongside this growth, safety became a top priority, with the implementation of workplace policies that have since earned recognition as a leader in workplace safety.
The year 2000 marked Hayworth’s 25th anniversary, but it was also the year of a great loss, as Elmer Schmidek passed away. Determined to carry on his legacy, Elmer and Doreen’s children stepped in to manage the business, ensuring that the values and work ethic instilled by their parents remained at the heart of Hayworth’s operations. Gary took on a leadership role in sales, while Cathy Dool assumed responsibilities in marketing and Arlene Schmidek became the administrative manager. Together, they guided the company through a period of transition and revitalization, maintaining its commitment to customer service while adopting new technology and business strategies to drive future success.
In 2004, the company moved just a mile down the road to Zone 2 of the Acheson Industrial Area, where it remains today. What started as a single building with Husky as its only neighbor has since become a thriving business hub, growing alongside the community. Supporting this community has always been a core value of Hayworth’s, from launching food donation drives in the 1990s to ongoing contributions to local charities and industry events.
